The Longer Story

My name is Ernie.  I am the founder of Simple Brown soaps.  The journey started before the 2008 fuel price spike.  I purchased my first diesel car in 2001 and was interested in making biodiesel.  By 2007, I was tinkering with my first biodiesel processor and had acquired several other diesel powered cars.  Since I am an engineer (spelled geek) I designed my own process and processor that would not make any waste water.  I wanted the operation to be economical, very reliable, and safe.  What I came up with is probably a one of a kind in this country (I got a lot of ideas from across the pond where fuel prices are much higher than ours).  By the time of the 2008 price spike, I was grinning from ear to ear.  During the next subsequent high price era, from 2011 to 2013, the machine more than paid for itself.  With the savings, I was able to improve and tweak the machine to what I have today.

A by-product of my process is very high-quality glycerin.  Back in 2008 when I made my first batch of soap from the byproduct, I was cleaning up the equipment and was impressed with the soap.  I thought to myself, finally I don't have to throw away all that glycerin!  I have been tinkering with making glycerin soap since then.  I sold some soap locally on Craigslist and to some of my friends.  Fast forward to today; I decided to sell my soap, so I got serious.  I applied for a trademark on a catchy name, “Simple Brown.”  I set up an Amazon web store in the handmade category and started up this website.  I also wanted to have a little fun doing this, so I hope you enjoy some of my corny humor on my labels and this website.  I'll do my best to stay out of trouble and not offend anyone.

One word about the color of the products.  They are all brown or dark amber.  There is no way to change the color without a huge cost, harsh chemicals, and additional processing.  So, I say you have to be OK with the brown color or "down with brown".  For those of you that will simply not use the product because of the color, this product may not be for you.  You should probably get a castile soap from a well-known doctor if you are looking for a natural soap.

I hope you try and enjoy some of these products.  They are real products with few ingredients, and I think you will find that they work well. These soaps are surprisingly gentle on your skin and hair, and they are biodegradable.
